3 Key Ways to Live the Freelance Dream

Freelance translators have both a range of risks and a range of advantages that those employed fulltime never get to experience.

One of the joys of working freelance is the ability to set your own hours and to work when you want and from where you want. In that spirit, here we look at some quick tips for making the best of your flexible freelance schedule.

Build your life to suit you

Every person is unique, with their own working habits, family commitments and lifestyle choices. As a freelancer, you can ensure that your working life is constructed in such a way that it suits your own requirements.

Take advantage of your flexible schedule in order to ensure that family commitments are met. If you have young children, for example, build your working hours around the times that they are either in school or in bed. That way you can maximise the number of hours you spend having fun with your family, providing your young brood with memories of a happy childhood that will last them a lifetime.

 Don’t sweat the small stuff

Regardless of whether you work freelance or as a fulltime employee, certain chores will always arise. From the dusting to the weekly food shop, no-one is immune to the demands of modern life and the housework tasks that it brings with it. However, as a freelancer who sets their own schedule, you do have the ability to ensure that your essential chores are completed how and when you choose.

Time your trip to the supermarket correctly and you can enjoy a stress-free shop in an almost empty store, without needing to queue for more than a minute or two at the checkout. Time it wrongly and you can spend twice as long fighting your way around the store with stressed out fulltime workers, before joining the back of a lengthy checkout queue.

The same applies for trips to the post office, hardware store and pretty much any other retail or public service location, so take advantage of your flexible schedule and think through the timing of your chores in order to reduce their impact on your life.

Take a break

Whether you like to take a series of short, intense city breaks or spend weeks at a time travelling the world, make the best of your flexible freelance schedule by planning your work around your preferred holiday style. For some freelancers, this means taking a long weekend every month. For others it means working solidly for nine months of the year and then taking three off.

Whatever your personal preference, be sure that your workload is balanced in order that you can enjoy the freedom that working freelance provides. Working freelance can be stressful and risky, so make sure that you balance out those factors by enjoying the positive benefits of it to the max.
