How to prepare for attending a translation conference

Attending a translation conference is a great way to stay abreast of developments within the industry and to network with existing and potential partners. It’s possible to just turn up on the day having not undertaken any preparation, but those freelance translators looking to get the most out of the event would do well to prepare in advance. Here’s how.

Plan your workshops

Read up on each of the workshops that will be held at the conference and make sure your name is down to attend those that are most relevant to you from both a learning and a networking perspective. This will help to ensure that you get maximum value from the event.

Research the speakers

Conference speakers tend to be influential individuals with great connections, so do a bit of research and find out what opportunities a quick chat with one or more of the speakers might give rise to. The speakers will no doubt be much in demand at the event, but if you have a firm idea at the start of who you would like to network with and why, you will be poised and ready to grab the opportunity if it arises.

Remember your business cards

Be sure to have a handful of business cards with you at the translation conference, ready to share with new contacts. Networking at events like this can be extremely valuable, so you want to make sure that you take advantage of the opportunity. As well as your business card, you could consider printing a small flier detailing the translation services that you provide, how to contact you, prices and timescales. You may not need it on the day, but if you do then it’s ideal to have a few copies in your bag.

Take notes

Finally, be prepared to take notes at the event. You can do this on your phone or tablet, or simply on a notepad. Many events given out paper and pens, but not all so make sure you have a way to take notes with you when you arrive.

Final thoughts

What else do you do when preparing to attend a translation conference? How do you ensure you get maximum value from the event? Share your thoughts via the comments.
