5 of the World's Safest Cities for Your Freelance Business

Do you want to relocate somewhere? One of the great things about having a location independent job is your freedom to choose where in the world you’d like to work.

We have translators from different parts of the globe who work with us here at Tomedes, and a few of our translators aren’t native to that country either. After all, what better way to immerse yourself in another language than by living in the country itself?

If you’re looking to relocate and are hoping to find a secure city to live in, then this Hub post is for you!

Zoë Henry of Inc . recently published a list of the ten safest cities in the world. In this Hub post we’ll discuss five of the ten cities she identifies, highlighting the ones that could be most appealing to freelance translators. We’ll start from number five and finish with the world’s safest city.

5. New York City

You might not have expected this city to be on our list, but New York City’s homicide rate has fallen each year since 1990 despite a year-on-year increase in population.

The city also has a high degree of digital safety, which is great for freelance translators who are dependent on the internet to conduct business.

Moreover, the city’s significance for global business entails that it attracts numerous international travelers and is home to people of multiple nationalities, presenting compelling opportunities for freelance translators.

4.  Zurich

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland, but still has a relatively low population in comparison to other global cities. Obviously, this could actually be a big positive to a location independent freelancer, as you don’t require your clients to be within commuting distance and can thus enjoy the safety of a less populated city.

The Swiss also have outstanding healthcare facilities, which attract people from all over the globe.

3. Sydney

Sydney represents a fantastic blend of safety, opportunity and quality of life, as reflected in the city’s high life expectancy. The city is relatively popular with business startups, and could provide some great opportunities for networking and offering your translation services locally: as Asia is so close, you may find local businesses hoping to branch out there and in need of a good translator.

Of course, as a freelance translator you’re not just limited to locals to conduct business, and you could even swap your home office for a beach!

2. Amsterdam

This city has an enviable infrastructure and level of personal safety, making it a comfortable place to live. Amsterdam attracts artists and innovators from all over the globe, which could present some exciting business opportunities.

Further, European cities expect to host residents of multiple nationalities and languages, giving you the chance to brush up on your linguistic skills or make some business contacts.

1. Tokyo

Japan’s capital is one of the most populated cities in the world, yet also the safest. Its residents enjoy a high level of digital and personal security, and the government is also investing significant money in protecting the city against elemental threats, meaning that it should be a well-protected place to live too.

Tokyo attracts a number of entrepreneurs hoping to develop a global business, and thus may present a strategic place for a freelance translator to live too. Whilst exceedingly busy, there’s a strong demand for language tuition, which could make a nice side job to supplement your translation business.
