Freelance working has its ups and downs. It can be both a tough career path and one that is extremely rewarding. In the spirit of looking on the bright side, here we ignore the lack of sick pay and focus instead on five prerogatives you can only enjoy as a freelance! 

#1 Set your own schedule

One of the joys of working freelance is that you can determine your own schedule, building in your work to suit your lifestyle, rather than the other way around. This can be particularly useful to individuals with young children or variable health conditions, as they have the freedom to take on as much or as little work as they wish. 

#2 Choose your rates

Freelancers have the ability to choose their own rates, deciding on the amount that they are willing to work for and the amount that they are not. Whether an hourly rate or a ‘job and finish’ price, they can take comfort in the knowledge that they will always feel fairly compensated for their work, as they set the price themselves. 

#3 Select your clients

Another liberating aspect of working freelance is the ability to select your clients. Don’t have a good feeling about someone? Then don’t work with him! Freelancers are not required to put up with irritating colleagues in the office and they certainly don’t have to put up with annoying clients.

Instead they can cherry pick those they like working with best – the ones who are clear in what they want, appreciate of the freelancer’s efforts and always pay their bills on time. 

#4 Take frequent holidays

As a freelancer you have the option to take as much holiday as you please. Obviously, the lack of holiday pay needs to be taken into account but, that aside, freelancers are not bound by restrictive policies on how much leave they can take and when. Instead, they are able to book holidays when they like and for however long they like – something of which office workers can only dream. 

#5 See the world

Many freelancers (depending on the nature of their work) don’t have to stop at just holidaying in far-flung destinations, but can instead choose to live in them. The proliferation of online employment sites has led to a boom in the number of freelance workers choosing to base themselves in all kinds of locations. The only restrictions are visas and (potentially) time zones.
