Marketing is a subject about which many freelance translators are unsure. This is understandable: they are translators, not marketing experts. However, without spreading the word about the services that they offer, it is hard for individuals to get ahead in the competitive freelance translation environment.
Thankfully marketing guru Seth Godin has some expert advice to help individuals understand how to turn their service offering into something that makes people want it. Looking at risk taking and how and why it is appropriate, Seth considers how to convert your services into a desirable product which will spread to a wider audience.
The technical element of Dan Cobley’s presentation makes it a little more challenging than that of Seth Godin, but it’s well worth a watch. The comparison that he makes between physics and marketing helps to explain and clarify the ideas behind modern marketing campaigns. Big brand examples are used to support the concepts, which can be applied to everyone from global corporations to individual freelancers.
Looking to the future, Wingham Rowan looks at the future of the job market, with an emphasis on freelancers who have to work flexible hours, for reasons such as childcare responsibilities. Examining the way in which the labor market evolves, Wingham presents a situation of which everyone who markets their own services should be aware. Given this is a talk that is as much for employers as it is for those working for them, it’s an important way for freelancers to keep themselves up to speed.
