We all use Google (or a local equivalent) to search the internet. It’s become such a part of daily life that the verb ‘to google’ has now been included in the Oxford English Dictionary, enshrining it in the English language forevermore.
But are you getting the best out of your googling? Read our handy hints and tips for translators to be sure that you are using Google to full effect.
Many translators use Google for language research. The array of information online can be overwhelming, so it is always best to narrow down your search so far as possible. One handy way to do this is to use double quotation marks to search for results that only contain your exact phrase. Another is to use the minus symbol to exclude a word from your search results.
One particularly relevant tool for translators is the ability to search Google in other languages. To do this, type your search term and then add ‘inurl:’ followed by the country code. For example, to search for the word ‘cats’ on German websites, type ‘cats inurl:de’ into Google.
If you’re struggling with the meaning of a word, why not Google it using the image search function? Google will kindly display pictures of the word in question, helping you to establish quickly what it means.
