Video translation is a more involved task than document translation. That’s because the content that’s being translated needs to be transcribed and time-synced before the translator can get to work converting it to another language. Subtitle translation is often a core part of video translation as well, further adding to the complexity of the overall task.
Recently, a Tomedes client asked us to translate his video from English to Mongolian, allowing us to showcase our video translation expertise!
Can you speak any Mongolian? It’s a fascinating language, spoken by around 95% of the population of Mongolia, as well as people living in parts of Russia, China and Kyrgyzstan. In total, Mongolian has approximately 5.2 million speakers when all its dialects are taken into account.
The grammar and sentence structure of the Mongolian language will feel familiar to those who speak Japanese or Korean, as there are several similarities, though there is no linguistic correlation.
For English-speakers, Mongolian can seem tricky to learn, as it has more than two million words – around twice the number that English has. Not only that, but at least eight different Mongolian writing systems exist.
If that’s enough to put you off learning Mongolian, don’t worry – we have plenty of native translators who can deliver your content in flawless Mongolian, whichever writing system you need!
Our client’s recent video translation was testament to this – he was delighted by the work undertaken by our native Mongolian translator. You can read another example of our English to Mongolian translation work by clicking the link below.

Video translation work starts with video transcription. This is the process of painstakingly typing out the audio elements of the video. Accuracy is incredibly important, as a poor quality transcript will result in a poor quality translation.
The transcriptionist also needs to time-stamp the transcription. Doing so allows the resulting translation to be time-synced to the visual elements of the video, which is essential if the final, translated video is to make any sense to the viewer!
In the case of this client, as well as transcribing and translating the video, we also needed to translate the video subtitles from English to Mongolian. We were most happy to oblige.
Tomedes has years of experience of subtitle translation. Over the years our subtitling service has grown in response to client demand. As the consumption of video has increased around the world (a trend that’s still continuing), so too has the need for professionally written subtitles increased. We have both written subtitles based on our translations of clients’ videos and translated existing subtitles. For this client, it was the latter that was required.
When you consider the figures around video consumption, it’s clear to see why it has grown so rapidly. Global connectivity has increased at a rapid pace. As of January 2020, nearly 4.54 billion people were active internet users, according to Statista. That’s 59% of the world’s population – and the figure continues to rise.
As global bandwidth has expanded, people have been increasingly able to consume video. This has led to an explosion in the use of video in both our personal and our professional lives. And this, in turn, has led to a massive and sustained increase in demand for video transcription, translation and subtitling services.
As connectivity around the world has increased, so have consumer expectations. As shoppers, we expect to be able to purchase goods at any time of day or night and to use live chat services in the event of having a query. We expect next day, if not same day delivery.
These expectations apply to services as well as goods, which is why Tomedes provides 24/7 support to all of our translation clients. It means that no matter which time zone a client is in, they can always speak to a member of the Tomedes team, should they have a query.
For this client, the fact that he could speak to the Tomedes team 24/7 meant that whether he was in London or in Ulaanbaatar, he was always able to get hold of someone professional, helpful and knowledgeable in order to discuss his translation needs.
The need for translation changes over time – both for the type of translation required and its purpose. That’s why Tomedes keeps growing and evolving our list of translation services, so that we can deliver a responsive and efficient service to each of our clients.
